From time to time I will review books from one of two categories: books that are influential to my own writing, and other indie authors risking it for the biscuit such as myself. I am not paid for these reviews and I haven’t been asked to do them. I want to succeed and therefore I want others to succeed too. I’m just a swell guy sometimes.

This week: Misplaced Faith: An Apocalypse Cowboy Adventure by W.S. Wentworth. If you are a fan of the Fallout series, especially Fallout: New Vegas, then you will love this short story. It includes a gritty and hardboiled protagonist very reminiscent of the NCR Ranger in the New Vegas game but also has inventory management, rations, mutated monsters, and factions.

All of that is window dressing for a very entertaining story, and doesn’t get in the way of the narrative. The prose is engaging–I laughed out loud at several places, partly because of word choice–and I was disappointed the next story wasn’t available yet once this one ended on a huge cliffhanger. The climax was a great twist that I didn’t see coming until right before, much like the main character.

W.S. Wentworth seems to be a newer pulp writer, with one other title on Amazon so far. I honestly can’t wait to read the next one, hopefully due out in the next few months. You can, and should, purchase the eBook here, and follow Wentworth at his Substack here.
